It is critical for people to have a voice in what's required of them if they are going to change their behavior and take responsibility for their jobs. Second, employees need to be recognized as the authorities in their jobs, no matter how trivial to complex, a job must be a source of respect in any organization if the employee is going to actively take responsibility for accomplishing its goals and objectives. There also needs to be freedom for defining how a job gets done. To reduce a job to mere procedures is to take the responsibility away from it. Conversely, to give employees freedom in how they complete tasks is to create an environment of creativity.

Second, there needs to be an opportunity for the employee to bring their own unique set of skills and perspectives to the job so they have their own identity. When all these aspects of a job come together, employees begin to feel a high level of ownership, with accountability and responsibility becoming a core part of how they approach their jobs. It is important for managers to provide more of a foundation of freedom for bringing the unique skills of the employee to the tasks of the job and being more of a coach or mentor than supervisor as well.
