The study also determined that individuals making such changes could not count on support from friends or relatives and that other barriers to adopting better nutritional practices included the absence of any perceived urgency, and the greater cost and worse taste of foods considered more healthful. As a practitioner, I would use these results to develop approaches to overcome these types of barriers to the effective dissemination of information in ways that actually promoted meaningful changes. In some instances, that might include developing ways of improving nutritional quality within the framework of traditional cultural and ethnic nutritional practices. In addition, I would attempt to emphasize the health and longevity consequences of long-term poor nutritional choices to families as a means of encouraging greater support for individuals in need of improved nutrition-related behavior.
