Since Balfour, the western half of Palestine had seen a signifcant influx of Jewish immigrants despite the tough immigration policies of the British. They fled Germany and other parts of Europe during the rise of the Nazis; they fled Russia to avoid Stalin's many purges. This dichotomy of outcomes - the displacement of Palestinians and the establishment of a sovereign Jewish state, explains why in Israel the 1948 War is known as the War of Indpendence but amongst the Palestinians is known as the Catastrophe. The fact that sixty years later the issue remains unresolved is one of the reasons why the establishment of the State of Israel is one of the most imporant events in the shaping of the modern world. The political landscape was changed, perhaps forever, but so was the fate of the Jewish people. The conflict and the joy go hand in hand, which makes this one of the most significant events in the history of the Middle East, and of our times.
