Of particular concern is the continued focus of donors on health and education projects rather than agriculture. This may be attributed to the widespread attention that is paid by the media to illnesses and lack of education of underdeveloped nations. While education is extremely important and plays a significant role in increasing food security, by ensuring that farmers can utilize new technologies and giving people the education to succeed in the labor force, it is not the only factor that impacts food security. There needs to be additional attention paid to the link between education, increasing illnesses, and access to food (Smith, n.d.).

The food system is a complex issue that is influenced by an array of factors such as social, political, economic, and technical variables. Famine can be directly correlated to problems in food distribution which may be the direct result of political turmoil (Bellows & Hamm, 2003). It is important to note that the issue of food insecurity is a widespread phenomenon and is not simply made up of the severe cases that are given media attention. Failure...

In order to begin to address food security, one must first look at the social, political, and economic forces that influence distribution patterns and can either inhibit or stimulate cultural and technological advancements (Bellows & Hamm, 2003).
