The research showed that medicinal plants, commonly referred to as medicinal herbs, have been used by humankind for thousands of years for virtually every type of misery, real or imagined. The research also showed that the resurgence of interest in medicinal plants today relates not only to their potential for providing new medicine preparations, but the fact that there is an enormous amount of money involved as well, with little or none of it being returned by the multinational pharmaceutical companies to the indigenous peoples who depend on these plant materials as a primary source of medicine. In the final analysis, the ancient shamans, witchdoctors and medicine men around the world were clearly on the right track when they observed how these plants affected sick animals, and their trials and efforts at identifying those plants with the most efficacious qualities has provided mankind today with a cornucopia of medicines that have improved modern healthcare immeasurably. In fact, many observers suggest that modern medicine would be years ahead of where it is today if mainstream practitioners had only taken the time to listen to traditional...

Additionally, plants can house animals or provide prey animals with cover and camouflage to prevent them from being over-hunted. They also help create a more sustainable ecosystem. The presence of plants moderates the temperature and mitigates the effects of the wind and sun. The plants in the rainforest keep the rainfall patterns in balance with the rest of the earth's ecosystem ("The Biology of Plants," Missouri Botanical Gardens, 2009). Even

Before one can begin to understand the logic in legalizing marijuana for medicinal use it is important to understand the history of the argument both for and against it as well as the importance that it be legalized for future use. Thus, the manzanita can grow for over a century if the conditions are right. Manzanitas also serve as a good source of nectar for some of the more pleasant fauna of nature: butterflies and hummingbirds. The manzanita, therefore, is a shrub that can bring an element of

Narcotic plants and stimulants have been widely used in North as well as South America even before the discovery, 'not only for the purpose of exhilaration or intoxication, but also in connection with the practice of necromancy and in religious rituals and ceremonies accompanying the initiation of boys into the status of manhood.'(Safford, 1916: Pg: 387, P.I) Narcotic plants belong to those categories of plants called Psychedelic or Hallucinogenic plants.

In Germany it is still an offence under the drug laws to posses the drug but the laws are some what more liberal. For example the prosecution may not press charges where the drug was found to be in 'low quantity 'and was for personal use. Thus patients have received lower penalties. Drug addiction is not merely a failure of will or weakness in character, however having this 'brain disease' does not absolve the addict of responsibility for his or her behavior, but it does explain why an addict feels compelled to continue using drugs (Leshner 2001). Environmental cues that surround an individual's initial drug use and development of the addiction, actually become "conditioned" to the drug use and thus are
