¶ … Chief's basic personality and actions, that he will choose Billy Evans as the next vice president. The Chief appears to be very biased towards Evans, and against the other two, especially Laura Prove. His words to Frank Barnwood regarding the "gripes" of minorities also seem to indicate that his attitude towards these persons would remain unchanged, no matter how many articles he is given about the subject. If he were to appoint women in top positions, this would be only a token gesture, with little sincerity or confidence behind it. Furthermore Evans's relaxed attitude indicates that the decision in his favor had already been made during one of the cooling-off periods after a handball game with the Chief.

The person who should get the job is Arnie Sander. Both his expertise and his education work together to make him a top candidate for performing well as vice president. The fact that he is generally acknowledged as the company's most innovative "genius" shows that he is more than just a favorite of those who happen to like him. While Laura is also a good candidate, her in-depth knowledge of Ramsey's products is somewhat lacking. Her skills will allow promotion and eventually she might be able to secure a vice presidentship. Currently however, Sander is the superior candidate.

I do not believe impression management would have made a big difference in the decision, as it obviously hasn't in this case. Again, Evans's attitude seems to indicate that the decision had already been made, despite attempts by other promoters to get either Sanders or Prove chosen for the presidentship. Sanders' achievement would have created a significant impression, as would have the many articles placed on the Chief's desk by Barnwood. Nonetheless, none of these did seem to make an impression, as indicated by the attitude of Evans. The Chief also seems to have a fundamental inflexibility of attitude, which makes it very unlikely that impression management could change an already-made decision.
