Lymphedema What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition in which the lymph vessels are blocked thereby affecting the flow of fluid from tissues. The lymph vessels are an integral part of the body's immune system, so the blockage leads to a build-up of fluid in certain parts of the body such as arms and legs. One of the most common cause for lymphedema is the removal of lymph nodes as a part of the cancer treatment. When these nodes are removed, it obstructs the free-flow of immune cells and fluids.

Other than removal of lymph nodes, lymphedema can also be caused due to the enlargement of these nodes. Other causes of lymphedema include infections with certain kinds of parasites such as filariasis, injuries to lymph nodes due to accidents and skin infections like cellulitis that are more common in obese people (U.S. National Library of...

One or both arms or legs may have swelling including fingers and toes. With lymphedema, there is a constant feeling of heaviness in arms and legs and it may be difficult for the patient to perform everyday activities. The patient may find it difficult to perform activities because the range of motion becomes restricted and there is a persistent aching or discomfort on the swollen areas of the legs and arms.
Other than these symptoms, some patients may also have recurring infections in the swollen areas because the immune cells are unable to get to these areas which means the swollen areas are practically cut off from the body's immunization mechanism.
