Conducting in-depth interviews can be a vitally important part of an organization's ability to 'check in' in terms of how it provides critical services to patients. Structured interviews are designed to elicit specific responses about a particular component of the care that is bestowed, often with specific lists of questions to allow for quantitative comparisons of results; unstructured interviews solicit general information without a specific focus. Semi-structured interviews tend to have a purpose, but are less controlled in terms of their questioning and can allow for greater patient input.

However, parents' education about childhood health issues may be lacking, and conducting structured and semi-structured interviews of selected parents from a wide array of demographics at the school would better enable the instructions to target the most high-priority health services and address knowledge deficits. Semi-structured interviews might be useful to identify as-yet unknown health deficits, such as parents who are unaware how to obtain low-cost dental care for their children or themselves, or who are unaware of the ability to gain assistance for subsidized breakfasts. The use of such interviews would not only improve the health of students and families served by the school, but also improve academic performance, given that poor health is often linked to poor grades.
