Quality improvement in health care involves activities undertaken to elevate the patient experience and the health of the population. It also encompasses an improvement of the health care provider experience (Leonard, Graham, & Bonacum, 2010). To attain a set standard of quality in health care a there is need to appreciate that quality improvement is a continuous process that require: an understanding and knowledge of the quality improvement approaches and commitment of practice leadership by the staff and resources. The staff and management should work as a team in problem identification, coming up with solutions and making improvements on a continuous basis.

An essential component to achieving quality improvements is the laying down infrastructure to facilitate quality health care practices (Nutting, Miller, & Crabtree, 2009). Ideal quality improvement infrastructure is intended to act as support to management providing information, intervention, direction and assessment. The infrastructure support health care providers to embrace best health care practices in order to achieve set goal and objectives. The support is expected to provide cohesion among the stakeholders to achieve the goals with guidance to meeting the challenges.

Quality improvements foundational frameworks

A foundational framework is a tool that organizes health care institution functionality according to their objectives, patients and understanding of quality healthcare. The framework entails a multiplicity of performance dimensions with multiple interactions (Nutting et al., 2009). The selection of a foundational framework is guided by the needs in quality improvements and the available resource. Since quality improvement encompasses an organization's approach to improve the quality of care and service the use of set principles specified under organization strategy is deployed. The management team and directors of the institutions will align their quality improvement needs focusing on ensuring that the business aspects run in a way to guarantee its continued existence. They will focus on ensuring that the business remain sustainable through the operations undertaken, the utilization of available resources. The management will seek to align their objective with those of the industry and the regulatory bodies.
Health care providers view of quality improvement in a healthcare institution will focus on patient and community need. While this focus may be reflected in the management and directors' needs, it is at a deeper breath. Health care providers will focus on the accuracy of their diagnosis, dissemination of treatment and subsequent recovery outcome. Health care provider will also focus on how appropriate the treatment prescribed is to the diagnosis done (Pham et al., 2006). Measures encompassing community health status is a concern for the health care provider since they will incorporate measure to reduce disease occurrence in the community. The health care provider will focus on measures to reduce disease occurrence and minimize disease spread as a quality improvement criterion.
