Over the course of time, these high professional standards will improve moral and allow the military to more appropriately, adapt to the different challenges that they are facing. As professional officers, will men highly trained and professional enlisted personnel. ("The Armed Forces Officer," 1988) The fourth aspect of what society expects from officers is: a willingness to put their lives on the line for their country. This is important, because there are going to be times that key personnel are going to be in very dangerous situations. Those officers who are willing put their lives on the line for others and their country, help to advance the cause of freedom. Where, they are willing to ensure that those who are looking to do harm to the nation, are prevented at all costs from doing so. In some cases, this could mean that the officer may place their lives on the line for their men; while at other times for their country. Those who are willing to do this will help to ensure; that the greater good takes place, from their selfless acts. ("The Armed Forces Officer," 1988)

As an officer you have a responsibility to be: an effective communicator, a good listener and know how to troubleshoot. ("The Armed Forces Officer," 1988) the best leaders are those who are able to communicate effectively with the people they are serving with. This means, being able to have a relationship based upon mutual respect. Where, you can communicate in a way that the other party can understands the main points and the reasoning behind the idea. A second responsibility of being of an officer is: knowing how to listen carefully. This is one the most important responsibilities, with an officer having a duty to the personnel they serve with. Where, they will listen to what kinds of issues are on the minds of people under their command. The reason why this is important is: a good leader will set the example and understand what is occurring within the unit. When you are an effective listener, you are building the respect of men, by listening to what they have to say. You are also maintaining control, by influencing those under your command. This is called charisma. The best leaders know how to listen to various issues and then inspire those who serve underneath them. ("The Armed Forces Officer," 1988)

A third responsibility of being an officer is: knowing how to troubleshoot. This is important, because in any kind of military operation things will not go according to plan. When these kinds of situations happen, the best military leaders will know how to troubleshoot the problem and move forward. This is an important skill that an officer has a duty to instill upon those under their command. Where, they must show them the different ways to troubleshoot a variety of problems on their own.
