The military, which was trained by the United States, abandoned their weapons and posts and fled the towns due to the rising of the ISIS. The ISIS continued to overtake different territories and after they were attacked by the U.S., they responded by beheading several Western hostages. Although ISIS has been affiliated with Al Qaeda, they have a different approach, with their focus on killing the Shi'a Muslims. Furthermore, this group is making ample use of the internet to reach and attract followers, making it difficult to fight their ideology (Ryan, et al., 2016). Kurdistan turned out to be the strong one from the flock as it sided with the United States in 2003, despite not having fought in any way. With the Iraqi army flying out of their posts, the Kurds found a chance for themselves to prove their bravery; thus they welcomed the displaced Iraqis on the fight against ISIS. The Kurds gathered prominent attention from around the world and their fight against the Islamic State proved their strength of governing a nation of their own.
