What Is It About?
Apple’s Supplier Responsibility 2017 Progress Report includes a section on supply chain logistics, management, and ethics. In a special section entitled, “Manufacturing with the World In Mind,” Apple asserts its commitment to working with suppliers that can help them reach their environmental goals. Part of the global supply chain strategy is to help all partners switch to renewable energy. Ultimate goals include “driving programs that minimize carbon emissions, eliminate landfill waste, conserve water, and replace unsafe chemicals,” (p. 11). Apple also describes its paper supply chain management, in which almost all (>99%) of their paper packaging materials come from “recycled wood fiber or sustainably managed forests and controlled wood sources,” (p. 11).
Who Is Impacted?
In addition to Apple itself, all members of the company’s current and future supply chain are impacted by its policy. The Tech-Com case study shows how Apple helped this one major Shanghai final assembly supplier to recycle 100% of its manufacturing waste.
Key Issues and Opportunities
Obviously, this document reveals a dedication to corporate social and environmental responsibility. The opportunities for Apple to position itself as a global leader in this domain are clear, as the report emphasizes the corporation’s ranking on several scales, such as the Corporate Information Transparency Index (“CITI”). Apple clearly seeks to be a leader driving multiple manufacturing sectors to follow suit.
Why Is It Important?
Although the Supplier Responsibility Progress Report is self-congratulatory, it does detail the ways Apple is taking action to minimize its own ecological footprint and promote sustainability throughout multiple manufacturing sectors.
What is Being Done and What Should Be Done?
Apple details what is being done including the development of the Clean Water Program, the commitment to zero waste, the specific reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and more. The only thing that should be done is to remain on track to meet and exceed its goals.

This step was clearly a major personal landmark for him, but it caught attention in the business world as well, for several reasons.
