¶ … BP is one of the largest names in the oil and gas industry, it has certainly drawn a lot of attention as a result of the environmental damage it caused as a result of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The company has since employed an even tougher attitude with regard to environmental values in an attempt to emphasize its interest in caring for the natural world. When considering its current position concerning environmentalism, it appears that the company is going through great efforts in order to get people to stop associating it with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

BP's 2012 sustainability review provides more information concerning the company's interests with regard to the environment and to its accomplishments during recent years. The corporation first of all wants to have people acknowledge the important role it plays in the world's economic system. While it invests large amounts of money into finding and exploiting oil and gas reserves, it also invests a portion of its operating cash flow in alternative energy. The company invested one billion dollars in alternative energy in 2012 alone.

The review points out that BP is well-acquainted with the strategies it needs to employ in order to be able to thrive. "Our aim is to keep building a BP that is well matched to the world's evolving energy needs." (Bob Dudley -- Group Chief Executive) This makes it possible for readers to understand that alternative energy is rapidly becoming a major source of profits and that by redirecting a business' attention toward exploiting this situation, a company is more likely to experience long-term benefits. It is not a matter of if BP is going to abandon exploiting gas and oil, as it is a matter of time until the corporation does so.

BP knows that it would be impossible for it to get people to put the 2010 oil spill behind them and capitalizes on this event by providing the public with the opportunity to observe the wide range of actions that the company has performed during the last three years with the purpose of alleviating the damage that the spill has caused in the Gulf of Mexico area. It is intriguing to see that the company puts across a positive attitude with regard to the event in an attempt to have people focus on things other than the actual event.

Even with the fact that BP promotes the 2010 event as it tries to demonstrate that it is doing everything in its power in order to reduce the damage that it has dealt to the environment and to individuals living in the territory, it is interesting to observe how the company does not mention other environmental damage that it is responsible for. The Prudhoe Bay oil spill is just an example of the critical hits that BP has dealt to the environment. One might find him or herself wondering how many years are going to pass before BP quits associating itself with the 2010 oil spill.
