Running is just like music, capable of infinite varieties of rhythm and mood. And, like music, running is an art that requires endurance, skill and determination. Often, music and running are not viewed in the same light. Some look upon music as an intellectual activity that has little in common with the physical sport of running. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Every runner has their own rhythm similar to the vast array of musical categories.

Some prefer the hard driving beat of rock and roll or rap music. This is particularly true of short distance and sprint runners that require a fast pace to meet their goals of completing the run in as little time as possible. Other runners adapt the slower rhythm of classical music and jazz. For example, marathon and long-distance runners adopt a steady, slower rhythm that facilitates endurance over longer periods of time.

And, many runners use music while they are running not only as entertainment to relieve boredom, but to help them achieve their desired pace by running to the rhythm of the music. Also, like music, runners can run in zestful joy or somber melancholy. They can run with intent and purpose or jog along in carefree freedom. Musicians may feel that running doesn't require the training that their art entails and runners may believe that music doesn't require the same degree of endurance and determination. However, both groups are mistaken.

Running like music requires years of skill building to achieve desired results. Just like the musician, the marathon runner must train for years to complete a twenty mile run. This involves the daily practice of running that adds mileage to daily runs over time just as the musician adds notes and chords to their skill set after years of practice. And, the short-distance runner goes through the same excruciating repetition to shave seconds off of their run just as the musician must practice the same.
