Concerts Across Time The performer that I watched in a pop music concert is named PJ Morton. He is a keyboardist and vocalist, who performed with what looked like the helping of a full band. There were two baroque concerts that I watched. The first was entitled "Little Baroque Suite," whereas the second one was entitled "Une Fete Baroque." On the whole I did not enjoy these concerts very much. I certainly did not enjoy the first two I have listed in this document.

I found Morton's music and songwriting to be extremely bland, if not boring. This sentiment applied doubly so to "Little Baroque Suite." The music was extremely staid and just seemed to plod (if not march) along. The concert I liked best was "Une Fete Baroque," mostly because the various musicians and vocalists (and the conductor, especially) in this concert actually performed, complete with dancing and a number of props. The music was pedestrian, I thought, but the performance made it somewhat entertaining in terms of simply viewing a concert.

The music differs from the baroque era and now in a couple of ways. On the one hand, contemporary music is a lot less formal. This fact is denoted especially in the lyrics, which may contain vulgarity or simply celebrations of mundane things. A good example of this fact is the tradition of the blues which much contemporary music -- including both rhythm and blues and rock and roll -- continues to a certain degree. Baroque music is a lot more formal.

There are certain selections (such as everything that was performed in "Little Baroque Suite") that are just so boring and dull sounding. There was a certain vivacity, of course, but it is a lot more rigid than the music of contemporary times. Additionally, a primary difference between baroque and contemporary music is the percussion involved. Percussion, including kicks and snares in particular, plays a principle role in most all popular music today. However, the percussion is extremely basic in baroque music.

There are several pieces which have minimal percussion, such as those found in the "Little Baroque Suite" (AdeleAnne) concert. Still, it is noteworthy that the percussion in the "Une Fete Baroque" (WarnerClassics) was more salient than most works in this genre. I would say that the principle point of similarities in the music between the baroque concerts and the pop music concert I listened to were the instruments.

Even though many of the latter were electric and the former were all acoustic, there were a number of strings in the baroque concerts. Similarly, there was a bass guitar in the pop music concert, which is just an innovation of the concept of stringed instruments utilized during the baroque period. Another point of similarity between the music in both periods was that they contained both instrumental as well as vocal passages.

Some of the vocals between the "Une Fete Baroque" and the Morton concert (VIP Media) were similar in terms of expression of the vocalists -- although they were of course singing in distinct styles. The principle difference in the role of concerts between the Baroque era and the contemporary one is that in contemporary society, pop music concerts are an occasion for concert goers to release themselves -- to unwind and enjoy the music.

Again, there was more formality associated with baroque concerts so, although there was some degree of pleasure involved on the part of concert goers, the occasion was altogether serious and considered highly valued art. In comparison, concerts are principally a venue for listeners to have fun, enjoy the music, as well as to intermingle and meet people. The type of people who attended concerts during the baroque period included fairly serious individuals.

These included royal personages and members of the government, as well as individuals who were considered high society or high class people. Attending concerts was definitely a privilege during this epoch. However, within contemporary times, concerts are attended by laymen or regular people. There are still some concerts (typically of classical or even Baroque music) in which the upper crust of society -- meaning the wealthy -- are more likely to attend than those who are not socially and monetarily elite.

However, for the most part concerts are attended by the general population. The average attenders of a rap music concert, for example, are just regular teenagers and young adults from all walks of life including many different races, nationalities, and religious denomination. As previously alluded to, people attend concerts within contemporary times as a means of having fun. Also, some go because they feel a really strong connection to particular performing artists. Others go because concerts are simply social events and ways of meeting new people.
