Stonehenge was certainly a marvel of construction technical, but Separate from the design process, Stonehenge is also experienced through the senses, which therefore gives rise to aural, visual, olfactory, and tactile architecture. As people move through the monument, Stonehenge is experienced as a time sequence. Even though our culture considers architecture to be a visual experience, the other senses play a role in how we experience both natural and built environments. Attitudes towards the senses depend on culture. The design process and the sensory experience of a space are distinctly separate views, each with its own language and assumptions (Meier; see also: Stonehenge Monument). One need only compare the artistic involvement and popularity of the Hubble Space pictures to note why the symmetry of Stonehenge is so pleasing artistically. If we think of the images that are popular; spiral galaxies, colorful nebulae, planets and stars, we can also see why something such as a monument that is both architecturally and artistically beautiful could remain moving to humans for over 5,000...

New discoveries are made regularly, and in July, 2010, the Stonehenge New Langscapes Project discovered a new henge (ditch) are about 900 meters from Stonehenge's out circle. This was found using ground-penetrating radar, and is not visible from the surface. Preliminary speculation holds that this may have been a wooden structure with the same alignment as the stone monument, built to hold people during ceremonies or as part of the outer structure. Work continues on this site, though, and the final determination not yet made (Institute of Archaeology News - Stonehenge).
Whatever the case may be, one may be sure that the iconic nature of the monument remains deeply imbedded in human consciousness.
