Discrimination Policy When it Comes

Discrimination Policy

When it comes to the issue of non-discrimination many companies are unwilling to put their money where their mouth is. They will make statements with regards to the topic but their actual practices do not match what they claim their policy is.

Microsoft has long been known as a company that practices and supports non-discrimination. The company promotes equal opportunity employment and advancement, works hard to incorporate a multi-cultural atmosphere and publicly denounces any hint of discriminatory practices, however, it recently came under fire when it supported a measure that would not allow homosexual couples to provide health and other benefits to each other through work plans.

It quickly changed its tune however, and now supports the legislature aimed at banning discriminatory practices in housing, employment and other life areas when it comes to the rights of gay couples.

In an e-mail to employees, Microsoft chief executive Steven a. Ballmer said he had heard from many workers who sent "passionate e-mails" conveying their unhappiness with the company's failure to throw its muscle behind the bill, as it had done with similar legislation several years ago (Vise, 2005).

After looking at the question from all sides, I've concluded that diversity in the workplace is such an important issue for our business that it should be included in our legislative agenda," Ballmer wrote to employees (Vise, 2005). "I'm proud of Microsoft's commitment to non-discrimination in our internal policies and benefits, but our policies can't cover the range of housing, education and financial and similar services that our people and their partners and families need (Vise, 2005)."

The organization that I work for has many advantages because of its decision to support non-discrimination.

One of the most important elements of life is diversity. By supporting non-discrimination laws the company provides a local atmosphere in which diversity is embraced and the company has a large diverse local pool to draw from for employees.

The support of anti-discrimination laws also sends a strong clear message to the workforce of the company.

We are aware that the company supports and embraces diversity, not because it is mandated to by employment laws, but because it believes it is the right thing to do for mankind.

Everybody in America, at this point is aware that to discriminate based on race, culture, gender or other factors in the workplace is illegal.

It sets the company up for large fines if it is caught practicing or promoting discrimination in the company.
