All the way home, the worst case scenarios ran through my head. Although Allen and I tried to keep up an air of optimism, I was envisioning "Amber Alert issued for six-year-old Emily - believed to have been abducted on her way home from school" rolling across the television screen.

As we neared the house, we could see a small crowd and approximately half a dozen police cars. When we walked in my wife came running up to me and as I hugged her I scanned the room. Two police officers were talking to Jan. Three officers were talking to my parents and in-laws who had come over as soon as Sara had called. It was a police officer from school. Apparently, the bus driver was late for a doctor's appointment that afternoon, and did not conduct his usual bus search after his route. However, after he came back from his appointment, he had spotted Emily asleep in one of the back seats. She was so tired she had passed out on the way home. The bus driver knew he had seen her get on the bus and just assumed she got off when he stopped at our driveway.
Emily arrived home in a police car about half an hour later. I will never again take my family for granted. It could disappear in the blink of an eye.
