MEMO: MAKING THE STUDENT BODY MORE DIVERSE There are several ways that the university can make the school more diverse without violating the Hopwood decision. The student body currently has 34% of undergraduates even though the university immediately brought its admission policies in line with the Hopwood Decision. The university is firmly committed to having a student body with differing backgrounds and perspectives.

In the past academic scoring has not been the deciding factor of whether a student can attend this university. What the university is looking for in admissions is students who will make leaders in the community. Visits, follow-ups, and communication is a vital measure in getting diversity and the quality of students that the university wants. Visits from college directors will play an active role obtaining a measure of new students. The directors will make several visits to students to get them interested in coming to the university.

The recruitment activities of the college directors are coordinated through the Minority student director. Although individual departments have the deciding factor in accepting the students. This will be worked together with all offices working and communicating together to get the best of diversity in this university. There will be open house at the university to invite seniors from various schools. This will be done with the entirety of the university staff and teachers being involved with invitations, announcements, and letters to students.

Recruitment by open house is an excellent way for students to meet the staff and teachers at the university. Various types of scholarship opportunities will be available and assistance for applying for these scholarships will be encouraged by individual departments and the financial aid office. There are several scholarships available for various students and these will be available for the students to apply for by having these listed in a flyer for open house and letters or visits to the students.

Individual departments will have meaningful diversity in visits and letters to both domestic and international groups. They will also encourage students with disabilities to apply for various handicaps that have been donated to the college for this purpose. Letting all students know there are ways to attend the university and to ask for help with this. There will be ways to encourage different minority groups to attend the university.

Letting students know the different opportunities that are available and encouraging them to sign up for the type of classes they want is an important part of diversity. Communication with students is vital in diversity. Friendliness, empathy, concern, and the ability to show the students that the school wants them to be a part of the community is vital in getting students from diverse backgrounds to attend.

It is important for all parts of the university to undertake a review of their part in getting students interested in attending the university. One way of doing this is to incorporate detailed information about the college. Understanding diversity and making it a priority is vital in achieving.
