Extra-Curricular Activities in Relation to Career Success EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES RELATION CAREER SUCCESS Over the last one decade, employers have changed from the conventional interviews of the potential employees to a more complex and viable recruitment process. Initially, employers would only consider the academic qualifications of candidates against the job requirement. This mode of recruitment neglected very many viable skills in candidates that were not available in their academic certificates and result slips.

Employment entails good interpersonal relationships with the clients as well as revealing high levels of expertise on the job performance. Following the revolution in the world of employment, most organizations have not based their recruitment process on not only examining candidates' academic qualifications against job requirement, but also the soft skills of a candidate. Soft skills refer to the personality traits of an individual. This discussion aims at establishing the importance of extra-curriculum activities in building one's career profile.

Good academic performance is a vital tool for revealing the potential behind one's intelligence and exposure, However, it has very little to convey about a person's interpersonal skills. Other than employing candidates with very sharp brains who are assumed to be creative, employees have found it even more beneficial to consider a candidate's interpersonal abilities. The work environment entails application of intelligence, creativity and application of interpersonal skills to enhance the teamwork relationship as well as employee-customer bond.

While choosing the best career, it is very significant to consider one's interpersonal skills and interests that would match his or her profession in the future (Yew Ming Chia, 2003, p. 77). For instance, working in the health industry deserves not only high levels of intelligence, but also good communication skills, patience, and a tolerable trait that would prevent quick tempers. Such traits and skills enable a health professional to work efficiently and effectively in an environment of tender emotions and shocking sounds.

An individual would be best suit to work in an environment that conforms to his or her personal ambitions as well as the interpersonal skills. To ensure competent soft-skills for candidates who attend interviews, institutions of higher learning have come up with extra curriculum activities to acquit learners with interpersonal skills. Through activities such social clubs and games, students can interact with others from different backgrounds and culture, and learn social traits that promote unity and social cooperation. These skills are vital for healthy team relationship in a vocational setup.

Institutions of high learning have also introduced new units that are essential for study by all students, despite their specialization (Vermeulen, 2008, p. 442). Such units aim at acquitting students with essential skills, such as leadership and social traits. Extra curriculum activities help students to relax their minds after study hours. Students that have relaxed minds perform better than those who never get time for other activities out of the curriculum course (E Massoni, 2011, p. 86).

For the organizations to recruit and employ people who are both socially and intellectually competent, the interviewing process has incorporated an individual's interactive tests that aim at establishing the candidate's personality and social skills. Interviewers have had moments to interact with the candidates and determine their social competence and match them with the desired skills to fill an opening within the organizations.

Reviewing the social competence of candidates has enabled many organizations to recruit the right persons in their organization based on individuals' skills that promises to the well-up of their employers. The contribution of extra-curriculum movements in building desired interpersonal skills and personalities in an individual cannot be underestimated at any chance.
