¶ … Flooding To put in simple words, a flood is too much water in the 'wrong' place that has a far reaching effect on people and the environment. The most common type of natural flooding is caused by streams and is mainly because of heavy rainfall or speedy melting of snow, generating water in the stream to flood its normal channel and cover the neighboring areas. Areas that are expected to flood from time to time are called flood planes (Lenntech).

Since the beginning of agriculture, people have settled on flood planes due to the soil fertility and easy availability of water for watering of crops. Also, communities use the water for transport. While in addition, flood planes being flat are even suitable for buildings, highways and railroads (Think Quest). Thesis: After a brief introduction on what is flooding?, the report will now give details on the natural causes of the flooding, followed by the effects and damage it brings to such areas.

A conclusion will be given at the end of report suggesting the precautions that should be taken by the government and the people. Causes of Flooding: combination of heavy rainfall triggering river / oceans to over flow their banks, causes flooding. Although it happens mostly in winter but can occur at any time of the year. These floods normally develop over a period of days, when there is excess rainwater to fit in the rivers and water spreads over the land next to it (Think Quest).

However, flooding can happen very quickly when plenty of heavy rain falls over a small period of time. Mostly 'flashfloods' happen with little or no warning, bringing the biggest loss of human life than any other type of flooding. Moreover, coastal areas are also at risk from sea flooding, when both storms and big waves bring seawater onto the land. However, the most horrible cases of flooding are a combination of storms, 'spring tides' and low atmospheric pressure (Think Quest).

Effects of flooding: Flooding is very dangerous as floodwater severely disrupt both public and personal transport by cutting off roads and railway lines. It suspends all communication links by damaging the telephone lines and disrupts normal drainage systems in cities, while sewage spills are common, representing a serious health risk, along with standing water and wet materials in the home (Lenntech). Additionally, bacteria mould and viruses, cause disease, causing allergic reactions that continue to harm materials long after a flood.

Floods distribute large amounts of water and suspended deposit over vast areas, refilling valuable soil nutrients to agricultural lands. On the contrary, soil is battered by huge amounts of fast flowing water, damaging crops, wiping out agricultural land / buildings and drowning farm animals (Lenntech). Thus, unfortunately, flooding not only causes many people's lives every year, but it often creates personal tragedies when people are swept away and drowned. Conclusion.
