Whether a person has an individualist or collectivist view of the self also makes a significant difference to political views. This can be seen by considering the abortion debate. For an individualist, the focus will be on the parent's right to choose, with the decision to keep or abort a child seen as being the parent's choice. In this way, the pro-choice position comes from an individualist viewpoint. In contrast, the pro-life position comes from a collectivist viewpoint. The collectivist sees people as being part of a larger group where every individual must live according to the standards of the group. The group's standards have been set as not accepting abortion and so every person is expected to accept this decision, regardless of their own personal opinion on the subject or their own personal decision on whether they want to keep or abort the child.
