The future of the wedding dress in post-modernity

Two dominant trends have emerged regarding the future of the white wedding gown. The first is that of its increased cultural ubiquity, even in non-Christian cultures. Just as white came to symbolize affluence and middle class prosperity in Victorian England, embracing the Westernized white wedding gown has become a cultural status symbol in areas of the world as diverse as Turkey and Japan.

In Turkey, a Muslim country, the trappings of Western weddings such as expensive engagement rings, lavish banquets and ceremonies, and above all the white gown have been embraced, particularly by the burgeoning middle class (Lovan 2011). Rather than purity or socioeconomic status, the dress suggests the income level of the users, much in the same way that wearing a dress that could never be worn again proclaimed one's status a hundred or more years ago in England.

In Japan, despite the association of whiteness with death in traditional cultural schemas, the white gown has likewise...

"Even though only a tiny fraction of Japan is Christian, a majority of couples have Western-style 'white weddings'...The 'white wedding' in Japan copies an archetypal Western ceremony. There are all the traditional elements: live music, an expensive white dress, and a giant cross hanging in the background" (Harnett 2012). Few Japanese are Christians, most embrace several religious traditions. A common phrase to describe the Japanese attitude towards religion is "born Shinto, married Christian, and die Buddhist" (Harnett 2012). The embrace of the image of Western culture is synonymous with the white wedding dress and an increasingly common approach to wedding traditions endemic not just to Japan but all over the world.
While the white dress is embraced by a diverse range of cultures and traditions, there is also increased personalization of the weddings amongst some American brides, as more and more brides are exploring innovations such as 'occasion' weddings, personalized cake toppers, and creative groom cakes.
