¶ … General Education Classes Classes in public speaking will give me the necessary tools to communicate effectively in any setting. It is not difficult to think of a time when I may not have been comfortable speaking in front of an audience, no matter how small the group may have been. This could be a real problem later in life. Verbal communication is a necessary tool needed to get one's point across. If one does not know how to communicate effectively, there is room for misinterpretation and error.

I am confident that since I have been able to take a class on public speaking my communications will be better suited to the plethora of people that I encounter. Now I am more confident when speaking in front of other people. I now know how to prepare myself for speaking engagements as well as casual conversation with friends and family.

Not only is public speaking useful in increasing my communication skills it will help me to be more confident while applying for jobs, as well as communicating with current and/or potential clients, supervisors, and colleagues. Sociology gives students basic and useful knowledge on how the world works. This class is useful for the same reason that history teachers tell their students to study history. If you do not learn it, you are doomed to repeat it. Sociology gives a look into humankind from many different aspects.

Culture creates a person and different cultures have their own traditions. By studying sociology, I have gained insight into other cultures and ways of life. This knowledge allows me to be more understanding of a person's circumstance. Not everyone has the same opportunities or even the same kind of lifestyle. Sociology opens your mind to that to show you "how the other half lives." To me it seems impossible to grow and change in a positive way without respecting where you have been and what helped you get there.

If you have a general understanding of people, it is easier to communicate in a happy median on his or her level. Throughout life, you have to interact with others. I know feel more suited to do so; it makes me more comfortable knowing that no one is perfect and we all have insecurities.

Knowing this allows me to be a more effective communicator and compassionate person. Both of these are necessary to have in school, work, and life. Often at school one needs to work in groups with different people, this is also true for work environments. A group is more effective when a basic respect & understanding for each other is in place. General psychology is useful in showing me how much we really tell people without speaking a word.

Non-verbal cues have helped people form opinions before we ever have an opportunity to do or say anything. I now know that little things I have done in the past may have been sending the wrong messages to others that I meet. Now I know to maintain eye contact, sit up straight, and speak directly. When you look at all of the classes, they interconnect in some way. They each give more insight into the other.

I have learned through my studies at HCC that nothing can be done well without the proper tools. Communication written or verbal is how we learn and teach each other. It is how we express ideas and thoughts. Taking Sociology has shown me an important part of.
