¶ … grew up in India, for the most part. I come from a home where my mother was my primary influence. For many years, she was divorced, and as a result, she mostly had to raise me by herself. I say that I grew up in India for the most part, because in the summers, I spent my time in New Jersey. New Jersey is where my grandparents live. By my spending summertime with my grandparents, they were able to share some of the burden of raising me.
That isn't to say that I was a burden to my mother, but raising a child on one's own is a large responsibility! My interest in education and business as a profession was highly influenced by my mother's family. Most of her family is made up of working professionals, so I have been exposed to many different professions; what the possibilities are for a career, the academic and work experience required to be successful, and the determination and discipline that is required to excel.
When I was in high school, in India, I decided to indulge my interest in business by taking a few courses. The more courses I took, the more my interest in business grew. I was fortunate to have my mother's family as a support system for many reasons, but one of those reasons was that I could discuss with them the things I was learning in my business courses.
I was able to gain more insight into the professional world of business, and I learned that more business courses could greatly benefit me in my own desires to enter the field of business as a professional. Armed with my interest in business and the conviction that more courses would further my interest, knowledge, and experience, I entered Delhi University as an undergraduate student in the business honors bachelor's degree program. While I was studying at Delhi University, I became actively involved in AIESEC India.
AIESEC in India was started by, "A group of students wanting to create a positive impact on the society by propelling global youth leadership" (http://www.aiesec.in/30years/). AIESEC is well established and partners with many businesses such as United Nations, Cadbury- Schweppes, Hewlett Packard. This year, 2011, AIESEC is celebrating thirty years of active student leadership in the area of business and business management.
During my year at Delhi University, I was fortunate to have the opportunity of working my way up to the position of regional coordinator for student exchange with AIESEC. I am very grateful to have attained a leadership position in this student organization as it provided invaluable insight to the world of business while exposing me to business on a global level. These experiences thus far have fueled my desire and goal to further my studies in business and business management.
Furthermore, having been raised primarily in a single-parent household, I know the dedication and hard work that it takes to excel in life. Due to the extent of my family that lives in the United States, I had the opportunity to immigrate to the U.S. One of the great benefits.
