Hypothyroidism The condition of hypothyroidism is caused by a thyroid gland that does not produce the proper amount of certain important hormones.

Pathophysiology:

The gland is located in the center of the neck and is described by WebMD (2012) as being butterfly shaped. The gland's hormone production is an important dimension of the metabolic process. Therefore, when its functionality is impaired, the body's capacity to digest, metabolize and utilize the nutrients and proteins yielded by food is also impaired. According to WebMD, "having a low level of thyroid hormone affects your whole body. It can make you feel tired and weak. If hypothyroidism is not treated, it can raise your cholesterol levels and make you more likely to have a heart attack or stroke." (WebMD,...

1) In the vast majority of cases, the condition is produced by an inflammation called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. (WebMD, p. 1) With this condition, the immune system attacks the tissue of the thyroid and ultimately impedes on its ability to create essential hormones.
Diagnostics:

In general, Mathur (2011) reports, the diagnosis for hypothyroidism is positive. That is, because of the commonality of the condition-- impacting somewhere between to 3% to 5% of all Americans -- hypothyroidism is seen as highly treatable. According to Mathur, "properly diagnosed, hypothyroidism can be easily and completely treated with thyroid hormone replacement. On the other hand, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to an enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy), worsening heart failure, and an…

Hypothyroidism Pathophysiology of the disease development The thyroid, a gland located in the front of the neck, plays a critical role in the body's endocrine system, specifically in regards to cellular metabolism-i.e. how cells use energy (NLM, 2015). In a normal, healthy person the thyroid is in a state of homeostasis with the rest of the body; however, in a number of cases the body can produce too much (hyperthyroidism) or too

In addition, she must engage regular thyroid function checkups to ensure that the standard regimen of treatment for this condition remains effective. In this case, the hormone replacement therapy that is the traditional method of treatment is one which absolutely must be continued to the benefit and survival of the unborn child. As the article by Shomon (2006) indicates, "you must continue to take your thyroid hormone replacement (i.e.,

" This drug has already won approval for use in Europe and the United States. Studies conducted show that the drug "targets the tumor to control in four areas: in the site where hypersecretion starts, in GH secretion, IGF-1 and in the symptoms associated with the disease (Unknown, 2004)." While the drug has been approved, there are still contraindications to taking it such as a patient who has an irregular

Synthroid, Drug Profile SYNTHROID® (levothyroxine sodium tablets, USP) is an important drug, used to treat hypothyroidism. Synthroid has been extensively studied for over 42 years. It is the most widely prescribed thyroid medicine in the United States. Currently, over eight million people are using Synthroid for thyroid replacement therapy. [Abbott, 2001] Synthetic Levothyroxine (T4 ) is identical in chemical composition and molecular weight to naturally secreted T4. Synthroid tablets contain the following
