Othello trusts him, so he lets his guard down. This allows Iago to see a weaker Othello and, as a result, shape his own personal image. This creates a conflict in the man that is already feeling out of place Iago simply feeds the fears Othello already has and adds to his disenchantment with a few lies of his own. We learn from Iago how evil people can be with so little effort and evidence. We also learn how reputations and images can become distorted when we allow ourselves to be consumed with ourselves. Othello watched Desdemona's reputation disintegrate right before his eyes and in the same wave of bad luck, saw his world come crashing down. All of this from the work of one man not even good enough to be lieutenant.
