Insurance Companies Charge You More

Last reviewed: September 27, 2007 ~2 min read

¶ … insurance companies charge you more if you drive a dark-colored car than a light-Colored car?

Car insurance companies are not in the business to be 'fair' but to make money, and they decide premiums based upon actuarial assessments. This is why, even if you are an excellent driver, if you are a young, teenage male you will pay more insurance than your older sister in her twenties. If "you have [been in] an accident. If you have a teen driver. If you file certain types of claim. If you don't have a garage. If you buy a car that happens statistically to be stolen more often. If you change jobs and have a longer commute to work. These are all reasons that an insurance company may decide gives them the right to raise your auto insurance premium" (Auto Insurance Resources. 2007, Official Website).

People with certain color cars may be statistically more likely to get into accidents, thus they can be charged more, and will be charged more by car insurance companies. The reasons for this greater statistical likelihood might be due to the fact that dark-colored cars are more difficult to see at night, hence people get into more accidents, or that people who buy dark colored cars, like red and black (as opposed to brown and white) drive more recklessly and get into more accidents. Regardless of the reason, or even if the statistical differential has nothing to do with recklessness or accidents, but is merely arbitrary and due to consumer buying habits (perhaps dark-colored cars are more popular this year) it does not matter to the company. All that matters to the insurance company is that if a driver with a certain kind of car is more likely to crash that car, his or her premium will be higher.
