Intended Major: Art and Architecture hope to major in the discipline of art, gaining my B.A. In art, and then pursuing a M.A. In architecture, with the aim of becoming a licensed architect. Art is one of the most demanding and complex of all the humanities subjects. Studying art demands a precise eye as well as a precise mind and hand. To create art, the individual artist must understand symmetry and beauty. The artist must also know how to use such elements as form and proportion in odd and interesting ways to jar the viewer's consciousness and ways of seeing his or her place in the world. Genius in art, as with so many things, requires both perspiration and inspiration, with a healthy dose of knowledge, experience, and technical learning as well.
An art historian must be able to articulate how an artist accomplishes this feat of combining all of these elements and how art relates to the history and culture of his or her day. An artist must look within his or herself and deploy the techniques at his or her disposal, and create from the basis of knowledge, technique, and personal experience. And an architect must fuse both of these roles into the creation of a work of art and function in the form of a building.
My main interest in the field of art is architecture. After majoring in art, I hope to pursue a master's degree in this discipline with the aim of becoming a licensed architect. Architecture is even more demanding a field, perhaps than art, for design must be functional and comfortable as well as beautiful and expressive -- some have called the field of architecture a vocation as well as a profession. One must be a skillful businessperson as well as a great artist of the eye. One must be well versed in the mathematics and spatial relations of numbers, and be a savvy negotiator as well with business contractors. One must create buildings that are energy efficient and let in a great deal of light, and lift the soul in a positive fashion by the way that light is dispensed across the floor and ceiling. One must create healthy buildings that are both sanitary and sanctuaries. One must, as an architect, become an artist of construction, as well as construct a soul every time one constructs a building.
