How can the Internet be used to achieve a business objective in the book selling business?

On the surface, the Internet might seem to be the least literary-friendly medium ever created. The existence of the Internet has been accused of turning consumers away from brick and mortar bookstores to the World Wide Web as a source for pleasure and enjoyment in the written word. Also, unlike books, the Internet generates free literary content. However, the Internet also has the potential to generate interest and create sales for an author, by providing message boards and chat rooms on websites created by booksellers. This creates a forum in which individuals can discuss their common literary passion, and thus generates further sales for the author and the bookseller.

Book websites can make reading a communal experience, rather than a solitary experience. Their existence can fuel interest in the writer's new offerings than would be possible through real-world sales promotions alone. Additionally, the web can provide links to the online bookseller that sells this author's works at more competitive prices than other sellers. Web-created articles and reviews can generate a positive buzz about the author's new works, and even authors with similar styles and subject matters. To broaden the advertising capacity of the Internet still further, websites can provide 'teasing' first chapters or blurbs about an unknown author of a similar literary genre as a beloved author. Or the site can provide some of the content from a nonfiction or 'how to' book that can generate sales for an interested audience.

Amongst young readers, who must buy books as part of their summer reading, or as a requirement for a class, book sellers can encourage these readers to patronize their stores specifically, by offering helpful reading guides for these readers, to enhance the experience and ease of reading classics in the classroom. The site can provide additional forums for young readers to ask school-related questions about books, or even to create imaginative fan fiction that young readers can post on the website, about popular, non-school related reading such as the Harry Potter or Goosebumps books.
