Positive psychology is a useful way to understand how education and work go together, as it puts focus on growth and using one’s strengths to achieve well-being. The concept of positive schooling refers to a learning environment where students are respected and feel respected; where they are motivated and become self-driven; and where they are encouraged to flourish emotionally and intellectually using the skills they possess (Kumar & Mohideen, 2021). Positive schooling includes having caring teacher-student relationships, individualized attention, and a sense of meaning and purpose within the academic context. Reflecting on my own educational journey, from elementary school to now as a senior in college, I can attest to the impact of such environments. One of my high school teachers, for example, always emphasized our unique abilities rather than standardized test performance, and her classroom felt like an amazing space where we were more than just another number or statistic—rather, we were human beings with potential; the class was like a workshop for personal development—not a space solely for content memorization. That experience definitely contributed to my confidence, my love for critical thinking, and my desire to pursue higher education. In my view, positive schooling is an ideal and a framework that can improve student engagement and well-being.

In support of positive schooling, it is necessary to imbue education with a sense of inclusion and equity (Spratt, 2017). Inclusive education means that all students have the same access to learning opportunities and support, regardless of their ability, background, race, gender, religion, or socioeconomic status. From a psychological standpoint, this aligns with self-determination theory, which focuses on autonomy, competence, love, and relatedness as essential psychological needs (Gauy, 2022). In analyzing my own academic journey, I unfortunately recall areas where equity was lacking. In middle school, I saw how students from non-English-speaking backgrounds were segregated into less-challenging classes without good support to bridge the language gap. I believe that a truly inclusive educational model of education means there should be an intentional restructuring of curricula, with focus on teacher training and policy updating so that all students feel seen, heard, welcome, and capable. Education systems should present culturally responsive pedagogy and eliminate tracking practices that marginalize minority students, and address structural inequalities that hinder success (Gauy, 2022).

Viewing education through a positive psychology framework helps to show how the learning experience can be better served. Positive psychology in education focuses on building strengths and resilience, and cultivating gratitude and optimism within the school community (Spratt, 2017). It is something that helps students perform better academically and develop greater life satisfaction (Kumar & Mohideen, 2021). As a college student, I feel that courses and instructors that are welcoming and offer purpose-driven learning and focus on growth over grades had a much more positive effect on my motivation. For example, in a psychology course on emotional intelligence, we were encouraged to reflect on our values and apply concepts to real-life situations, which made learning feel more authentic and meaningful for me. I think that for this reason schools that incorporate well-being curricula, mindfulness practices, and character education definitely help students internalize values. These are practices that help motivate and inspire; it is not just preparing students for tests—it is preparing them for life. If teachers make well-being the basis of all educational outcomes, schools can become spaces for greater human development, not just a place where learners memorize to score well on a test.

As students transition into the workforce, the psychological benefits of gainful employment are also relevant. Gainful employment is work that provides purpose, engagement, and opportunities for growth and contribution (Albrecht et al., 2021). Psychologically, such work supports mental health, builds identity, and improves social belonging. Personally, I can say that working part-time while attending college gave me a deeper understanding of what meaningful employment entails. My job was demanding, but it allowed me to interact with different people all the time, solve real-world problems, contribute to a team, and grow in my own skills and understanding. These aspects made the work fulfilling beyond just the paycheck. Moreover, psychological research shows that job satisfaction significantly correlates with life satisfaction, especially when individuals perceive their work as aligned with their personal values (Albrecht et al., 2021). Employers who understand and support these needs through positive environments and feedback systems help to increase productivity and grow employees’ psychological resilience.

Lastly, the strengths-based approach to work is a powerful strategy that shifts focus from deficits to capabilities. It is based on the principles of positive psychology, and encourages people and organizations to identify and apply innate strengths to improve performance and well-being (Albrecht et al., 2021). Instead of just focusing on areas of weakness, this model supports employees by focusing on what they do best. For example, during an internship in a student counseling center, I was introduced to Gallup’s StrengthsFinder assessment, which helped our team discover and apply our unique strengths to tasks. I realized that my top strengths were communication and empathy—which made me particularly effective in client interactions and team collaboration. This self-awareness was empowering and helped orient me for better task allocation and team dynamics. When workplaces adopt strengths-based leadership and development practices, they set the stage for higher engagement, and they can also reduce burnout, and build stronger teams. The approach reinforces the idea that excellence stems from authenticity and alignment rather than from correction or uniformity.
