Lyndon B. Johnson's Leadership Imagine living during a time in which power is transforming in the government. Before Lyndon B. Johnson became President, John F. Kennedy encouraged the space program as well as many other endeavors. When Lyndon B. Johnson took over everything changed under his control, and to this day some view him as a good or bad leader. One will study why he became a leader, his leadership and his accomplishments. Lyndon B. Johnson wrote "The American Experience," which was driven by ambition and a lust for power. He was elected in 1965 and he worked night and day to achieve his goal to become President. His biggest fear was to fail and ended up haunting him for the rest of his life. Politics was his life. At that time, he was considered the best when it came to personal relationships, and decided to go to an old advisor for advice about the Civil Rights Bill in 1957 (Class notes). Many conditions had a root when it came to his leadership style. For example, he had much determination. This was due to the lack of love from his mother and because he was afraid to let her down. His father was in politics, so Lyndon B. Johnson chose to redeem his name and to strive to do better than him. Through his endeavors, he had a massive ego and was quite abusive with his power. A for-profit leadership skill was the ability to measure things well. Government skill by treating people fairly without discrimination, and non-profit is to serve the mission by changing lives through empathy and vocation (Class notes). While he was in power, he created many areas that are worth considering. He had sector roles that included: government, for-profit business and the public society. This helped to set apart what each part did in order to maintain order. Furthermore, the Internal Revenue Service was not allowed to tax based off philanthropy. Each individual is allowed the freedom of choice and blame is not passed from one to another because of it. A person was required to have innovation and credibility; otherwise he or she could go out of business. The role of the government is to provide stability and order as well as protect the rights of people when businesses want to discriminate. This included provision of public goods because one is allowed to have a non-divisible good in order to assist the economy. Through this, grants are provided for the non-sector (Class notes). The civic sector is important. This is the private, not governmental organization and strives to solve problems. As a result, people to choose to volunteer in any capacity needed. Freedom of association was used in order for all of us to get together and solve problems. They are sheltered from for-profit and government actions. Each is able to express community values through how the organizations are solving the issues in the cities. Social good provisions were put in place, which was for those who could not afford it, especially those in a homeless shelter. Minorities were addressed as well. The Public Policy can undergo an experiment through the government watching them and will implement whatever works (Class notes). Lyndon B. Johnson had social contributions. According to the video (2011), this is what one learned from it. While in office, he was determined to become the best. Through civil rights, this measured his limits of moral obligation. He knew that if something was not done, then chaos would occur in the United States, which included finishing what Lincoln started. This started with bargaining with congressman southerners', and that prices were going to get paid by the people. A filibuster occurred because those in the south did not agree with it but Johnson chose to stick with it. As of 1964, the Civil Rights bill passed. He said that he would rather fight the communists in South Vietnam than on the west coast;...

In 1964, Johnson ordered the bombing of North Vietnam due to accusations that the Vietnamese fired on two naval ships in the Gulf of Token. However, this evidence was found inconclusive; consequently, this took place for five hours. At that time, few Americans questioned his actions. Congress approved the war, and the President used his power to resolve the issues at hand (Class video). By understanding Lyndon B. Johnson's legislative leadership skills, one can apply it to their own life. He had much determination by means of winning the election, since the one previously was stolen from him. Interpersonal skills were needed as a means through networking as well as working together with Republicans and Democrats. This was done by setting the pace for new members in the Senate. Driven by the deep psychological event from his mother withholding love from him, which made him get bad grades in school, and in order to redeem his family name he chose to do unethical things at times. He was an opportunist when no one could tell which side he was on with the Longoria case and the burial. In the midst of these traits, Johnson did have compassion, especially for the less fortunate. This was done through negotiation in order to achieve something good (Class notes). With Legislative leadership, four areas are worth mentioning. They consist of the environment, structure, power and applying styles. In regards to the environment, one can note that this was between the House and the Senate. This is an open-system. No one can get prevented from entering or exiting. Constant pressure exists from outside sources. A person has to stay attuned to the change and remain open to it. Second shift alliances, but none exist in the context for legislators. Through this, a person has to compromise and avoid making enemies at all costs. Third power floats give different members power at different movements. One or two will become an expert with certain issues. Power input takes place through those that are constituents and stakeholders. Any representative could come to office with an agenda and then later discard it, which would make him or her change what he or she thinking from the beginning. Structure is another area worth mentioning. The lines of authority are considered flat. Each person is influential, and can exert impact others on his or her behalf. An expertise in specialization occurs when one or two issues are addressed and select few individuals become experts because of it. Communication is also open and flat. However, this is easy across parties, such as office, social gatherings, juniors and seniors; where no walls exist, but conversing is expected (Class notes). Power goes with anyone in office. Formal authority comes from the position one holds. This includes committee appointments as well as parliamentary rules and procedures. Informal deals with the power of the individual and what he or she brings. Relational is about the ability to network with others. Judgment occurs by getting to know others and who is better at it. The idea of skill occurs by means of writing, speaking and so forth. Visionary leadership is useful when an individual can set a new tone or direction for the future. Coaching occurs for those that are new to the legislative environment, and this is the start of networking with other persons. Affiliate occurs when each member listens to each other. Democratic allows one to work with the open system, which allows ideas to flow as well as choosing the best elucidations. Pace setting and commanding takes place as well (Class notes). All of these are ways in which one can use their power for the positive or negative. Each person can…
