Sometimes the customer doesn't really know what they want and this is where a project manager can help to facilitate the customer's wants and turn those into a solution that works best for the customer and the company. Being close to the customer consists of having close contact and open communication with them in order to best anticipate and fulfill their needs. Besides having technical and managerial skills a good project manager will also have good leadership and people skills. They need to be able to work well with not only the stakeholders in the project, but the members of the project team as well. They are ultimately responsible for making sure that the project team delivers what the customer wants on time and within budget. Communication skills are also very important for a project manager. They need to be able to communicate the progress of the project to everyone that needs to know. They also need good organizational skills in order to keep the project flowing in a timely fashion so that all deadlines can be met. Missed deadlines lead to cost overruns, failed projects and ultimately unhappy customers. Good project managers must posses an overabundance of skills in order to have successful projects.
