Thank you for highlighting the importance of a professional code of ethics in urban planning, especially in government planning. I completely agree with your assessment that a code of ethics provides a moral compass and sets boundaries for acceptable behavior. It is an essential of all public service and should be taken seriously in urban planning, as Chan (2022) points out. Chan (2022) is actually a great resource and I would recommend it for further reading on this topic. The laws and codes of ethics ensure that planners act responsibly and in the best interest of the public.

I also appreciate your mention of the Old Testament laws and the Bible verses that encourage ethical behavior. It is important to remember that our actions should glorify God and that we should avoid conflicts of interest. The example you gave of a conflict of interest, where a planner misuses their position to benefit personally from their decisions, is concerning. It is essential for planners to operate transparently and ethically to maintain the public's trust and confidence in government decision-making. As Matthew 6:24 reminds us, we cannot serve both God and money. We must choose to prioritize serving the public and following ethical guidelines over personal gain. Planners who choose otherwise do so at their own detriment.

I would say that one thing that could strengthen your post would be to describe in some detail what a code of ethics in urban planning might look like. It is one thing to discuss it in theory but another to see it in practice. I think when we get down to the nitty-gritty of a thing, and see how it appears in practice it can really help reinforce key concepts and principles that need to be applied in the real world in a big way.

This was a great post! You brought up some very interesting points about the development of urban planning and the importance of ethics in the profession. I completely agree with your assessment of the AICP Code of Ethics, that self-awareness is a crucial component for planners, and humility is key for those who serve in leadership roles. This is an idea that has been brought up by many other scholars as well in various fields (Hasanah & Mujanah, 2020). This is also as 1 Timothy 4:16 states, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” Self-awareness is so important.

The comparison to Psalm 139 and Romans 12:10 I thought also highlighted well the importance of seeking God's guidance and serving others in all aspects of our lives, including our professions. And it's great to see that many planners today are more diverse, educated, and trained in ethics, although it's still important to be cautious of those who may be in it for their own selfish gain. I think that can be a real danger that requires oversight.

To that end, I do appreciate your thoughts on the use of technology in preventing violations and safeguarding data integrity. The study you mentioned by Li & Liu is a good example of how technology can help improve ethical standards in the field. I also agree with Johnson et. al's comparison of the codes of ethics for planners and city/county managers and the importance of considering the effects on both the administration and citizens. As we navigate the ethics of this issue, we must always remember to keep humility and grace at the forefront of our hearts and actions. Self-regulation should follow from self-awareness, and is the best type of regulation in my opinion.
