Nueman Logical Theory

Assessment Phase

Contemporary nursing has so many theories which aim to better the practice of modern nurse. Yet, one truly sticks out among its competitors, Judith M. Nueman's view of health. Including mental health. Along with mental health, is a view which incorporates the patient but also uses a holistic and open ended approach. Its successes can thus help provide a model for future nursing practice.

The Nueman approach presents a refreshing nursing practice approach. This is one which takes into account not only the needs of the patient, but how those needs can be met in terms of coinciding with the unique situation each nurse finds him or herself in. Janet Nueman took a very holistic approach, where environment and unique patient characteristics help facilitate a much tailored strategy of care. Thus, "the Nueman systems model reflects nursing's interest in well and ill people as holistic systems and environmental influences on health" (311). Thus, the data collected under this methodology tends to be more abstract, including environmental factors such as social life factors, mental states, any emotional agitations, and so on that could be impacting the health of the individual as well.

Nueman used what is now known as the open system to collaborate traditionally unrelated elements of nursing. The relationship between the variables within an open system. The key idea here is that all variables within the environment impact each other, and when these variables are in harmony, patient well-being will improve. Essentially, in the Nueman system, there is more of an abstract goal because of the open systems approach. The research suggests that "when its elements are continuously exchanging information and energy within its complex organization" (311). In many easy, this is similar to systems theory, which approaches organizational operations with how well the individual systems within it work independently and together. This is a situation where the environment is "all the internal and external factors that surround and influence" the environment system of each patient (316). As such, the factors that are important in the Nueman model may seem abstract, which goes against the general rule of simplicity

In regards of not only how easily the theory is understood, but also how it can be redone in actual practice. Really, Nueman's theory emphasizes the importance of focusing on the stressors and then tailoring a care strategy based in what the individual can actually perform in his or her own unique community environment.
