Nursing Theory The Evolution of Nursing in Larger Scientific Discourse Nursing has definitely come a long way since its humble beginnings. From a practice that was largely informal and unregulated, it has come almost full circle as a very standardized practice with very specific processes and requirements from those nurse practitioners who continue to take the field even further in terms of its potential and capabilities for providing the utmost specialization of care for those individuals in need.

For one, the practice of research in the nursing field has come a long way since the more informal days of nursing practice. Nursing research has developed significantly over the past few decades and has come to represent practices seen in other genres of "normal sciences." There are now serious empirical inquiries which utilize scientific and statistical methodologies to test hypotheses and come to conclusions that aim to benefit the field of nursing as a whole.

This type of research often revolves around the more abstract concepts in nursing, like the strategy and execution of care practices and how those are reflected within a real life environment as seen in the perceptions and opinions of the patients undergoing care. Nursing research follows the standard scientific approach that other genres of science do, showing how nursing has evolved into its own branch of medical sciences.

Just as in other "normal sciences," the conclusions drawn from such research are then implemented into how practice is conducted within the larger field. The research findings are not isolated and left to just summarize and theorize the elements of nursing. Rather, they are peer reviewed just like other findings and often adopted into standards of practice for nurses of all qualifications and positions to follow.

As such, it is clear that the field of nursing has come to embody the true elements of what others consider a "normal science." Types of Reasoning One of the main types of reasoning discussed in the readings is logical reasoning. This type of reasoning features the use of inferences in order to come into knowledge about a certain experience or phenomenon. Essentially, inferences are the way that conclusions are drawn after systematically examining observations and external phenomenon.

It is close to the style of scientific inquiry which is also a very logic-oriented methodology. The primary idea behind inferences is that an individual sees or witnesses some stimuli or phenomena. From this event, that individual can then make their own conclusions as to why or how that particular stimuli or phenomena occurred, making an assumption based on external observations combined with prior knowledge of similar events and circumstances.
