¶ … parents to provide a rich learning environment for their children at home. Generally speaking, the most effective methodology for doing so typically varies according to student age and individual interest. However, one can generally stratify these methods into those that pertain to habits that should be practiced, as well as those relating to habits that should not be practiced. Quite simply, an efficacious learning environment can manifest by both taking action and also avoiding certain action that may lead to undesirable outcomes.
One of the essential methods that can help to provide an atmosphere in which students can come to enjoy learning at home is reading. The particular form of reading which is most beneficial depends on the child since it is always beneficial for children to read material that they are interested in -- especially in terms of extracurricular activity at home. Therefore, books, board games, magazines, and certain activities such as the boy scouts or girl scouts -- in which children must do a fair amount of reading for respective badges and activities -- can all help to provide an atmosphere in which children enjoy learning and reading about different points of interest. There are also some internet tools -- such as certain games or websites with fun information for children learners -- that one can access to provide this sort of environment. Parents should make a point of taking their children to the library and to the bookstore, and encourage them to read books that are both within and outside their area of interest, in order to broaden that area of interest.
It is perhaps equally important to curtail certain activities that are counterproductive to a conducive learning environment. Such activities include watching television, which should be heavily monitored by parents. Although there are some educational programs that can inspire children to learn, there are many others (especially those designed for children) which provide mindless entertainment and which should be circumscribed or altogether halted. Other activities that should be limited and which are not conducive to positive learning include video games, especially those which involve gratuitous and copious amounts of violence. Lastly, it is highly important to monitor internet usage as well as texting and mobile phone activity. These technologies can provide a great deal of distraction to young learners, and should be regulated in their usage in order to promote learning.
Finally, it is also important to teach children the realities of finances as they specifically apply to math to foster this particular skill. One of the most amicable ways of doing so is to provide children an allowance and to play various games with it and other forms of money. It may be beneficial to help children calculate interest, or to consider various forms of loans and rates which enable them opportunities to exercise their mathematical abilities. Math actually exists in nature, and fun mathematical activities can involve counting the leaves of flowers and trees in the neighborhood or the backyard.
