Explain Margaret Mead's research on how gender roles vary from culture to culture.
Margaret Mead studied three tribes in Samoa to include: Mundugumor, Tchambuli and Arapesh. In the Mundugumor tribe, men as well as women were: violent, aggressive and desired power. In the Arapesh tribes men and women were gentle. While, the Tchambuli tribes men were: emotional, dependent and never in control. Conversely, the women were in charge, yet they were lacking any kind of motivation. As a result, all the three cultures are different from one another as far as gender roles are concerned (Mead, 1935).
