Rapport Building And Self-Enhancement Process Term Paper

This scale would indicate participants' positive feelings between themselves and the examiner. The wording of several items on the questionnaire was changed slightly, for example, "therapist" was changed to "examiner." A different subscale was used to test the hypothesis that assessment feedback accelerates rapport building. Another subscale asked questions regarding participants perceptions about themselves were reaffirmed and they felt proud, secure, or important after the testing experience. The final subscale was used to further understand how assessment feedback enhances a sense of self-enhancement, particularly a sense of self-discovery. The results supported the authors hypotheses that providing assessment feedback results could have some therapeutic value. I though the study was positive because very few studies have systematically attempted to identify the processes or mechanisms underlying the observed outcomes. The study concluded that personalized feedback was associated with processes related to initial establishment of rapport and to the enhancement of intra-individual states such as self-awareness and self-regard. However, the study had several limitations. The clearest limitation to me was that the participant sample mirrored a past study on the topic. I believe this was a strong limitation, because varied groups...

In this study, the results pertaining to rapport-building as a hypothesized underlying process were clear and consistent. Participants receiving feedback following an assessment felt a stronger rapport with their examiner and had fewer negative feelings about the assessment session than participants receiving no feedback. The study could have been conducted by using participants from two or more different colleges, or school settings. Even though the Florida university was chosen because it was a commuter college where the students would not talk amongst themselves about the study, there are other colleges that could be compared to each other that are located far enough from each other where the participants would have no interaction with other.
The results pertaining to self-enhancement as a hypothesized underlying process were also less consistent. Participants in the feedback condition did report a significantly greater sense of self-verification and self-efficacy/self-discovery than participants in the control condition. Consistent with previous research, they also scored higher on self-esteem and self-liking. I believe that future studies should take into account a larger population with varied ages and backgrounds. Additional research in this area is…
