COUNSELING

Counseling: Counselor Self-Reflection

How I Responded to the Assessments, Type of Reactions

For the professional practice assessment (PPA), most of my responses were “agree” (rated as 3) except three. My growth section was the one in which I had rated myself at 2 for two statements. Those are the areas that I need to work on more aggressively to learn to participate in self-growth activities and self-reflection ones. It would help me become more aware of myself since self-awareness supports increasing intelligence levels and a better understanding of others. It would add to my cultural understanding of others in my counseling career. My critical thinking skills would sharpen for a better interpretation of the intricacies that I should be prepared to deal with in my future career. In another section of the same assessment, I rated myself at 2 for soliciting, considering, and responding mindfully when someone tries to give me feedback. I do not show concern for other people’s thoughts about me, which might be rude to them as it may lead me to treat them badly or even think of them negatively.

For the cultural competency assessment, most of the responses were “agree” (rated as 3) except the five statements for which I self-assessed myself with “disagree” (rated as 2). I evaluated that I need to know about racism, discrimination, power structures, and stereotyping for myself and my clients in the future. This knowledge would assist me in interpreting any mental health risks related to their cultural background, for which I need to engage in constant research vigorously. Research would facilitate learning for different cultures and issues that people face in diverse ethnicities since public awareness and education of my counseling patients would depend on extensive research only. Research would give me the latest information for dealing with people outside my culture, their values, beliefs, and religious implications on the counseling treatment for narrowing down my scope to certain mental health problems along with social and political factors.

Goals and Objectives

Goal and Objectives for Engagement Section

My goal for the engagement section would be:

· Being engaged in constant research for continuous professional development, self-exploration, and self-reliance in most matters related to cultural competence.

For this purpose, my two objectives would be:

1. Engage in self-stress coping activities to reduce incidents that trigger me and restrict me from responding thoughtfully to constructive feedback. This would help me in self-exploration, and for that, I can read a book daily for 15-20 minutes rather than using my phone and wasting time on social media platforms, or use the help of stress-relieving coloring books for adults.

2. As professional development requires ongoing research, I would read articles online to use my phone or even laptop in my free time. If I use my phone for social media, I believe it can be used for some productive activities so that my cultural familiarity and self-reliance for my professional progress.

Goal and Objectives for Accountability Section

My goal for the accountability section would be:

· To be more positive when anyone gives feedback and be stand accountable for the wrong action I did. Even if it is not morally wrong and just a minor mistake, I want to be more open to suggestions.

For this purpose, my two objectives would be:

1. Making changes, either in me or in my work routine, make use of time more effectively and eradicate the habit of making mistakes. Although, it is said that one learns by making mistakes, and it is sometimes alright to make some. However, in my case, if I am not initially comfortable when someone gives me feedback or corrections, then I should be more careful in making alterations regularly.

2. For clarity, I would make myself more organized, be it de-cluttering my working desk or re-arranging my files, etc. It would help reduce my stress levels and add to my work productivity. It would make fewer mistakes and more approval for my final work from the supervisors or boss. I plan to remove any distractions in my work so that my focus is directed and I take less time for my tasks.

Goal and Objectives for Growth Section

My goal for the growth section would be:

· Expand my vision for personal growth and become mature in professional gains related to counseling so that I become resilient and come back with greater positivity for my career and social welfare.
