Last reviewed: February 28, 2011 ~4 min read

¶ … shape the kind of person that we will become in the future. In my situation, the various events from my past would determine who I became. As they would teach me two of the most important attributes to be successful in life: flexibility and focus. This is because, I was taught at an early age that I needed to be able to adapt to a host of situations. Where, I would move to the United States when I was in middle school from Korea and had to overcome the various cultural as well as language barriers. At the same time, I had to be able to maintain my grade point average during the entire process. This was challenging, but it taught me that I need to be able to have greater amounts of flexibility in my life. To learn this, I would work diligently at understanding new ideas and concepts that were necessary to master these different subjects. Even though this was time consuming and involved a certain amount of frustrations, I was able overcome these challenges to become assimilated into American culture. At which point, I continued to maintain and improve my academic achievements. They helped me to be able to attend the first two years of college. Then, towards the beginning of my junior year, I had to return to Korea for military service requirements.

When I was in the Army, I learned how to be able to concentrate better, than I could during civilian life. As the different aspects of the job, challenged my physical and intellectual abilities. This had an impact on my personality by: teaching me discipline and how to be able to take the lessons I learned earlier in life to become more successful. As a result, my experience in the Army allowed me to: understand who I really was and ultimately determine what I wanted to do with my life. Once my enlistment was up in the armed forces, I returned to the United States and continued with my education. Where, I decided to peruse a degree in Accounting.

This is something that had I had a passion for over the course of my life. However, like most young adults, I was not sure about a good choice for a career path. After I came of out the Army is when all of this would change, as the experiences helped me to decide what direction I should go. Since that time, my levels of academic achievements have been outstanding. This is because of the experiences that I had in the Army, helped to give me the skills to improve my concentration. At which point, I became a well rounded student, who truly understood what he wanted in life.

I believe that I am good candidate for the scholarship, because I have been through the ups and downs of life. As the experiences of the past, have shaped who I became and how I would live. This created a basic foundation of knowing how to be successful, through applying a sense of values.

When you put these different elements together, they are showing how I have the ability to overcome a host of adversities, in order to achieve my goals. This is something that most people have not been through. As they have the academic credentials, yet are lacking real world experience. In my case, I have better a record and the experience to help me excel. This has improved my levels of achievement, as the various tools that I have learned throughout the course of my life are something I can rely on.
