Social Problem of Homelessness Teaching Social Issues Homelessness is a social problem that is prevalent around the world and particularly in the United States of America. Homelessness has existed for much of "civilized" human history, with sharp increases in eras of history such as the Industrial Revolution. In the last two centuries, homelessness and changed and expanded, though there remains a significant amount of research to be done.

Professionals who study and research homelessness have argued over its formal definition for decades, though for some, the definition of homelessness seems self explanatory and obvious. The paper will examine homelessness, particularly as it exists in the United States of America, the country that has the highest homelessness rate in the world.

There are individuals and groups who choose to be traditionally homeless, but for a great deal of the homeless population, it can be a dangerous and tragic lifestyle that is a result of a distinct set of social factors. Urban development increases the potential and likelihood of homelessness as well as makes the homeless population more visible. Whereas with less development or in examples of sustainable development, there is less homelessness or at least there are places for the homeless to group together and create an informal community.

More developed spaces mean more people will become homeless and those of us who are not will be able to see them very clearly. People from all ages and cultures are homeless; there is particular attention paid to the welfare of homeless children as the kind of lifestyle homelessness provides may hinder their emotional, intellectual, and psychological development. Thousands of children are born into poverty in the United States annually, and thousands more live in poverty, often drifting into homelessness as they become adolescents.

(Crosson-Tower, 2009) Visibility of homelessness is one reason why this social issue has warranted greater quantities and types of attention, particularly in recent decades and especially in the United States & with respect to children's welfare. It is challenging for modern researchers to measure and quantify homelessness definitively, but they endeavor to do so as a means to decrease it, especially in the United States.

Capitalism is heavily predicated upon social and economic disparities among the population, which contribute or support the data that proves that the United States, the most capitalist country, experiences the greatest amount of homeless. There is an abundance of speculation on the factors that directly cause it proposed by the media, political figures, and others, in the United States, Europe, and other developed nations where homelessness is prevalent and acknowledged as a serious social issue.

The extent to which homelessness exists varies considerably across developed nations, with the United States appearing to be a leader among nations of the developed world. Though homelessness can be found anywhere, most shelters in.
