Clinical Review

Relationship with Preceptor and Fulfillment of Clinical Goals

My experience in the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) has been significantly enriched by my relationship with my preceptor, who has been great in guiding and gradually increasing my responsibilities. In terms of fulfilling my clinical goals, I have made progress, particularly in understanding psychiatric conditions and patient care, but I recognize the need for further improvement in writing concise psychiatric notes and managing my time effectively.

Evaluation of the Agency/Clinical Site

The CPEP is a first point of contact for patients with acute psychiatric conditions, providing a high-energy and challenging environment. The interdisciplinary team works cohesively and quickly. As a psychiatric NP student, I observe that NPs help with managing patient care by balancing clinical assessments with therapeutic interventions. The site is conducive to learning although fast-paced.

Factors Influencing the NP Role

The main barrier to my role as an NP student has been the lack of computer access, which has limited my ability to independently document and manage patient information. However, this has been mitigated by collaborating with PA students and engaging more directly in patient interviews and discussions. My background in medical-surgical nursing has given me a solid foundation for understanding the medical aspects of patient care.

Self-Evaluation and Performance Critique

Reflecting on my performance, I have grown in my ability to assess patients and develop treatment plans. However, I need to work on creating more succinct notes and improving my time management skills. I plan to seek ongoing feedback from my preceptor and team members to continue refining these skills.

Reactions to Client Interactions and Treatment Responses

Interacting with patients in acute psychiatric crises has been both challenging and highly educational. I have learned to manage my reactions in intense emotional situations, maintaining professionalism while offering empathy. Observing patients' responses to treatment, especially the rapid stabilization with appropriate interventions, has been particularly rewarding. It shows the impact of timely and effective psychiatric care.
