The teacher must use effective discipline to ensure students do not interrupt one another, know to raise their hands, not get out of their seats during class, or engage in disturbing activities. This is disrespectful to the learning of others as well as simply against the rules. Drawing up a list of rules to obey for the students is one way to help students understand how the U.S. Constitution, for example, was negotiated and formulated.

Student assignments will include everything from pretending to be various historical characters in costume, to doing Internet research to understand what are reliable and unreliable sources, as well as more standardized essays and tests to prepare them to meet nationalized testing standards. Some students are natural talkers and will enjoy pretending to be Henry Clay, arguing for his position on admitting new territories into the union. Other students will enjoy creating a poster that illustrates and weighs the evidence about global warming, pro-versus con, informing as well as entertaining their fellow students. Other students will enjoy cutting out newspaper articles about an issue that interests them and presenting their findings in a report.
To teach is to change, and to learn is to be changed. Every teacher hopes the student will walk out of the class with positive memories, having learned a great deal, and having learned better how to learn. Students should gain in esteem of themselves as learners and people and gain a greater sense of personal investment in their society and culture, and feel a greater respect for the diversity of our society.
