Gender and Career Success

The aspect of gender and the bearing it has both on the career choices and career has attracted significant debate yet still there are unclear areas on whether the gender of a child will contribute to the career path and the success or failure there after. This essay will delve into the above subject and dissect the possibility of gender having significant bearing on the success of an individual.

The gender of an individual significantly affects the career success of the individual since there are various aspects of gender-based discriminations or preferences that still exist within the society. These preferences contribute to the individual success or failure in their career depending on the area of specialization that they choose.

The differences in the success in career by the different genders are largely determined by the perceived or even real differences in the society. There are challenges that are unique to women and hence they have to work through them in whichever profession if they are to make their career as bright as that of their male counterparts in the same organization or specialization. These are factors that women have to contend with from the national levels in politics where their male counterparts receiver more coverage than them, to the domestic levels where female roles are defined by the males and general male chauvinism pervades the society (Rowe J.L., 2014: Pp2).

Apart from the perceived and the real differences in genders, the formed stereotypes also work to the detriment of the female gender in many professions, particularly those that are deemed to be masculine. In this aspect, the male too suffer when they dare delve into the careers that are deemed to be feminine in nature. This means that for the individual to succeed in that particular career, he or she will have to work hardtop overcome the basic challenges of the career as well as the set stereotypes to be successful. In this particular aspect of the stereotypes and how they impact the career success of an individual, the female gender has been noted to suffer more than the male counterparts when it comes to upward physical mobility in their careers (Enache M. et.al, 2015: Pp4). It is estimated that 47% of the labor force is covered by women and yet, most of them will remain in the paid labor bracket for more than 30 years as compared to their male counterparts who quickly tranced to the higher levels of their career fields (Evers A. & Sieverding M., 2013:Pp3-4). This explains the relatively low representation of the female gender in the higher levels of each career, the business couture finds a problem with females being at the highest levels.

Further projection of the stereotype that contributes to the career stagnation of many women is the stark reality that generally women earn less than the males barely one year after they have graduated from college. The pay gap is not unique to the U.S.A. but even in other developed nations like Britain where for instance there is a 25% gap in pay between the male and the female doctors and yet this gap cannot be plausibly explained (Rowe J.L., 2014: Pp4).
