Advertising Is Effective in Stimulating Consumption From print to radio to television commercials, advertising is defining the meaning of perfection.

In line with the Stuart Ewen's argument, advertising is dictating what to wear, what to eat and where to go.

How advertising relates to the area of "design, self, and society

Advertising contributes to the improvement of the society

Ads are inspiring and uplifting people, encouraging them to behave in ways that benefit them and others.

Advertising is brightening lives simply by being tasteful, entertaining and witty.

Most advertisements are instances of graphic design.

Here, graphic design refers to the process of visual problem solving and communication by using space, type, color, and image.

Advertisers use graphic designs such as branding, logos, posters, billboards, product packaging and website graphics.

For instance, an advertiser could use product packaging composed of artwork such as logo and pure design components like shapes, color and images to unify the piece of an advert.

c. Self-concept is defined as the integrated conceptual framework comprising data about oneself.

i. It focuses on a person's fundamental frame of reference.

ii. In human behavior, it assumes a pivotal part. On advertising, the audience is presumed to go through a procedure of comparing contents with self when subjected to advertising messages.

3. Controversy

a. Although advertising is considered as a necessity for economic development, it has come with some social costs.

i. Cases of spams involving unsolicited commercial email are becoming prevalent and considered as nuisance to the audience.

ii. Advertising has increasingly invaded public sphere like schools, which is a version of child exploitation.

iii. One notable controversy in the modern day is that of the predominance of ads about foods with high sugar, fat and salt levels, particularly to kids.

iv. Food ads that target kids are exploitative and are not adequately balanced with appropriate nutritional information to help kids understand the impacts of their food decisions.

a. The government has urged food companies to either advertise foods that match the dietary guidelines or limit their advertising to kids.

4. Importance of the topic

a. Marketing communication and advertising messages are creating a series of debatable issues following the public beliefs that advertisements are deeply affecting the way individuals perceive themselves, as well the world around them.

b. Therefore, it is important to explore this topic given the fact that advertising is expected to identify, project and fulfill consumer demands profitably.
