Theology -- St. Leo University Core Values Saint Leo University fosters several core values for the benefit of its members and the wider communities served by its members. The core value of "Community" encourages members to "listen, learn, change and serve" to create a socially accountable, accepting, unified and interconnected University community. This socially accountable environment, based on trust and respect, assists members of this University community and ultimately the communities that are and will be served by members of the University.

The encouraged practices of listening, learning, changing and serving are readily applicable to the establishment, improvement and adherence to an Emergency Action Plan. Body: The Application of Saint Leo University's Core Value of Community to an Emergency Action Plan a. Community Saint Leo University's core value of Community is focused on establishing environments that are socially accountable, encouraging all its members to "listen, learn, change and serve" (Saint Leo University, n.d.). In order to achieve these goals, St.

Leo University promotes an essence of acceptance, solidarity and interconnectedness through shared "trust and respect" (Saint Leo University, n.d.) b. Emergency Action Plan and Community Application The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) has established minimum aspects of an Emergency Action Plan, per 29 CFR 1910.38(c) (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). First, there must be established ways of reporting emergencies, such as using an internal emergency number or pulling a fire alarm (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

Community members can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing their expertise to establish and/or continually improve the optimum reporting methods, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning the approved methods of emergency reporting, developing a heightened awareness that will notice an emergency situation, and in properly employing the established methods of reporting emergencies. Secondly, OSHA requires that there be procedures for evacuation and assignments of emergency escapes (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

Community members can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing input to establish and/or continually improve the best procedures for evacuation/assignments, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning the evacuation procedures and assigned evacuation routes for themselves and others, by complying with those procedures and taking their assigned routes, and by assisting other members in complying with procedures and using their properly assigned escape routes.

Third, there must be established procedures for employees who stay on in an emergency to maintain vital plant operations before their evacuation (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

Community members can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing their input to establish and/or continually improve the best possible procedures and people for carrying out vital plant operations, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning these procedures, and staying behind to operate critical operations if they are so assigned, then evacuating when and how they are supposed to do so according to the procedures. Fourth, there must be procedures to account for all individuals after evacuation (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

Community members can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing their input to establish and/or continually improve these accounting procedures, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning the procedures and assisting others in learning them, and complying and assisting others in complying with these accounting procedures. Fifth, there must be assigned rescue/medical duties for members who must perform them (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

Community members can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing their input in establishing and/or constantly improving those duties, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning and assisting other members in learning those duties, and complying and assisting other members in complying with those duties. Sixth, there must be established names or job titles of contacts for additional information and/or explanation of the Emergency Action Plan procedures (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

A Community member can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing his/her expertise in establishing and/or constantly honing the list of resource persons, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning and assisting others to learn these contacts, and using and assisting others in using these contacts for additional information/explanation of the Emergency Action Plan procedures. In addition to the requirements of 29 CFR 1910.38(c), OSHA recommends some further aspects to enhance an organization's Emergency Action Plan.

First, OSHA suggests a specific description of the various alarms to be used for distinct emergencies (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). A Community member can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing his/her expertise in establishing and/or constantly improving the various alarms and describing their uses, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning and helping others to learn this alarm system, and using and helping others to use this alarm system in the event of an emergency.

Secondly, OSHA recommends an alternate communications center in case of a fire or explosion that impairs or destroys the main communications center (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.).

A Community member can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing his/her expertise in establishing and/or constantly improving the alternate communications site, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning and assisting others to learn about the alternate communications center, and using and assisting others in using the alternate communications center in the event of the main communication center's impairment or destruction.

Finally, OSHA suggests a secure location for originals or duplicates of vital records including but not limited to accounting records, legal documents and emergency contacts lists (OSHA - U.S. Department of Labor, n.d.). A Community member can "listen, learn, change and serve" by contributing his/her expertise in establishing and/or continually improving the secure records location, entertaining and discussing the contributed ideas of others, learning and assisting others in learning this location, and using and assisting others in using this secure location.

Application of Saint Leo's core value of Community by listening, learning, changing and serving regarding each aspect of an Emergency Action Plan creates a collaborative effort built on communal trust and respect.
