The research showed that this influence was due in large part to the consolidation of disparate Bantu tribes in southern Africa to forge a veritable empire that comprehended more than 80,000 square miles and half a million loyal followers. The research also showed that gender relations in Zulu culture are male dominated, but Zulu women can gain increased influence and social status through age. Primarily cattle-keepers, the Zulu also engage in various agricultural pursuits as their geographic location allows, but remain tied to their traditional culture and values today in ways that frequently place them at odds with modern Western society.
