~6 min read 5 sections Marketing · Social Media Marketing
Abstract

This paper examines Amazon's social media strategy at both the national and global levels, identifying critical gaps in the company's approach to platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat. Despite impressive Facebook fan growth and strong brand recognition worldwide, Amazon lags in visual social media engagement and localized content creation. The paper explores how Amazon's global dominance can paradoxically become a weakness in reaching local market segments, discusses the risks of over-reliance on metrics, and considers threats to Amazon's expansion in BRIC nations. The paper concludes with actionable recommendations for improving content strategy, platform diversification, and consumer engagement.

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper grounds its critique of Amazon in concrete platform-level evidence (Facebook growth vs. Instagram underperformance), making the argument specific and credible rather than general.
  • It balances macro-level analysis (global brand strategy, filter bubbles, BRIC market challenges) with micro-level recommendations (scheduling content, hiring full-time managers), showing range across strategic levels.
  • The risk section effectively presents both sides of the metrics debate — the danger of over-reliance versus management's need for measurable results — demonstrating critical thinking rather than one-dimensional advocacy.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper integrates academic sources (Scott, 2017; Serrat, 2017) alongside industry and practitioner references (Hitz, 2017) to support its claims. This blending of theoretical frameworks — social network analysis — with applied marketing practice is a strong technique in business and communications papers, showing that the argument is anchored in both scholarly and real-world authority.

Structure breakdown

The paper follows a problem-analysis-solution structure across five sections. The introduction establishes Amazon's mixed social media performance. The second section contrasts global and national campaign needs. The third addresses business value and profitability, including market expansion challenges. The fourth weighs the risks of both under- and over-using metrics. The final section delivers a bulleted set of actionable recommendations, offering a clear deliverable for the reader.

Introduction

Some of the most successful social media campaigns have operated under the radar, like that of Goodwill of the Great Plains (Bitter, n.d.). Others are broader and international in scope, like that of Amazon. A global brand with localized needs, Amazon is an ideal company to analyze because of the success of its national and global campaigns. Yet at the same time, Amazon is not known for its social media prowess. Lacking in creativity, Amazon's media campaign reveals several gaps that can be addressed through more thoughtful leverage of the power of social media.

If metrics alone were the measure of a solid social media campaign, Amazon would have no problems at all. On Facebook, total fans of the Amazon page have increased exponentially ("A deep dive into the social media habits and performance of Amazon," n.d.). The same is true for Twitter, albeit with far more moderate growth ("A deep dive into the social media habits and performance of Amazon," n.d.). Where Amazon really suffers is in visual social media, such as Instagram. Metrics show Amazon is floundering there, barely paying attention to the need for active engagement across multiple platforms ("A deep dive into the social media habits and performance of Amazon," n.d.). This report reveals gaps in Amazon's overall social media strategy with the goal of offering strategic recommendations for how to improve its presence.

National and Global Campaigns: What's the Difference?

Amazon's reach is so thoroughly global, and its brand so entrenched in the public consciousness, that the company barely seems to need any social media presence at all. Yet nothing could be farther from the truth. Consumers expect to be actively engaged — even entertained — by companies. Clever social media campaigns create content on the fly, generating hashtags that lead to viral marketing. Essentially, customers do the work for the company when a social media campaign and social marketing strategy are executed well. Amazon's biggest strength — its global supply chain and brand recognition — can also become its greatest weakness when it comes to social media.

As social network analysts like Scott (2017) and Serrat (2017) point out, the global reach of a network is not a measure of its embeddedness. Local messages are critical for reaching subcultures and market segments: the consumers who actually use features like OneClick. For Amazon to differentiate between its global and national campaigns, it would need to hire specialized staff capable of creating culturally relevant content. Hashtags in local languages, imagery that can be shared on Instagram and other visual social platforms, and compelling blog content would also help embed Amazon in local social currency.

This is not to say that a global campaign is unimportant. Amazon's success lies in global strategies that leverage not just social networking and social media like Facebook, but also work with Google to influence algorithms. Amazon solidifies the filter bubbles that Google creates. Amazon's role as a curator of digital content is key to a successful global campaign. Although this approach can be seen as limiting, it somewhat reduces the immediate pressure to invest heavily in Instagram and other platforms that competitors must monitor more closely. Working locally, however, Amazon would do well to increase conversational content it creates and monitors on Facebook and Twitter. Rather than relying solely on ad placement and the tracking of personal data, Amazon should be crafting a cohesive story around some of the products and services it offers.
