Introduction

One of the most important determinants of how well one can remember something is attention. Learning and the subsequent encoding of information in the brain cannot happen if the learner is not attentive. Similarly, the recall of a piece of information from the brain cannot happen without adequate attention. Therefore, attention is one of the most important prerequisites for proper cognitive functioning. It has been established that attention is especially important for the storage of explicit memory — memory about objects, places, and people — a process that heavily involves the hippocampus.

As a psychologist who splits time between a workplace and a university, continuing to learn is essential for professional excellence. This requires engaging in learning in both settings and, from time to time, accurately recalling what has been learned. Good attention and memory are indispensable for this. Furthermore, professional practice frequently involves helping clients unlearn certain behaviors or acquire new ones. Such changes can only occur effectively when clients are attentive and have strong memory, because it is through attention and memory that they receive information, organize it, store it, and later retrieve it when needed. Understanding attention and memory more deeply therefore enhances effectiveness both as a learner and as a practitioner. Knowing more about the workings of the brain also equips a psychologist to better serve a diverse range of clients.

The Relationship Between Attention and Memory

Attention and memory have long been subjects of interest for scholars in neuroscience and psychology, particularly in the study of intellectual function. However, most such studies have addressed these subjects separately. Attention studies typically ignore the key role of past knowledge and perceptual experience, while memory studies often ignore the importance of attention in the encoding of learned information. This is the case despite many scholars having long concluded that a strong relationship exists between the two. For example, William James, an influential psychologist, once stated that it is undeniable that something one focuses on attentively will be encoded in memory, while that which receives no focused attention does not remain in memory (Badre et al., 2005). Similarly, neuroscientist Eric Kandel stated that one of the greatest challenges in his field is to understand the mechanisms through which attention affects the encoding and recall of experiential memory (Kandel, 2007).

Despite the relative scarcity of studies specifically investigating the attention–memory relationship, many researchers have focused on how to enhance memory. Most have concluded that attention is important for memory encoding. However, precisely how attention facilitates memory encoding remains unclear. Moreover, while it is now widely accepted that directing attention toward places, objects, and persons increases the likelihood of later recall, how attention affects unconscious memories is less well understood. Most studies in this area have relied on brain imaging technologies, and it is anticipated that continued innovation in such technologies will reveal further insights (Kandel, 2007).

How Memory Modulates Perception and Attention

Far fewer studies have examined the reverse direction — how memory modulates perception and attention. Nevertheless, a growing body of researchers is now investigating this question. What is already known is that memory is essential to perception. For instance, one cannot recognize a familiar person without first having previously seen them and then matching the current perception to what is already stored in memory (Chun & Turk-Browne, 2007). It follows from this that explicit episodic memory, unlike implicit perceptual memory, may require the availability of cognitive modulating resources in the parietal and frontal regions of the brain.

Conclusion

This review has explored the link between attention and memory. Contrary to previously held assumptions, the evidence examined shows that there are meaningful differences between storage and attention in working memory. The evidence also shows that visuospatial attention and working memory overlap only in cases where feature conjunctions or spatial locations are stored in working memory. This suggests a significant degree of independence between the way attention and working memory function. It is hoped that these findings will stimulate further research in areas that remain underexplored in the study of the attention–memory relationship.
